      Technical Report Writing

Let’s work together to build your next report. Whether you need consistent status reports and data, or you need one long-form report, I can help!

Reports typically fall into formal reports (many pages, often including executive summaries and appendices) and informal reports (see the next section for type). I have been providing regular reports for freelance clients for five years, and I excel at MS Excel, even developing macros to automate report processes, when the need arises. I’m confident I can help you craft your next report!

      Report Writing

What Kind of Report Do You Need?

Want to investigate or describe a problem to your manager?

You need an investigative report, designed as a precise analysis of a workplace problem and including your recommendations for how to proceed. I can help with that! Contact me for your custom rate.

Considering a solution to your workplace problem?

feasibility report will fulfill this need. Your feasibility report will go through your new solution’s chances for success – its necessity, labor and funding needs, complications, and your recommendation for the best solution (if multiple solutions are presented).

I can help with that! Contact me for your custom rate.

How are you solving your workplace problem?

One of several reports might suit your needs, depending on how you’re solving the problem.

      • Test Report: A brief report detailing the results of a test and the procedures taken; analyzes the reports, if necessary
      • Laboratory Report: A longer report detailing the results of a test or procedure. A laboratory report includes the reason for the test, equipment and methods, problems encountered, and the results – including your recommendation on how to proceed.
      • Progress Report: A report informing your superiors about the status of your project, including the progress achieved, problems encountered, and steps yet to be taken
      • Activity Report: A report informing your superiors about the progress achieved by one team member (often yourself)

I can help you with any of these reports! Contact me for your custom rate.

Do you need to take a trip to solve your problem?

You need a trip report – a record of your business trip and its accomplishments, including a record of expenses incurred.

I can help you write your trip report. You don’t need to invite me on the trip to help you out, but if it’s by the beach, I won’t complain! Contact me for your custom rate!

Did an accident occur in your workplace?

I’m sorry to hear that. You will want to fill out a trouble report, including details on what happened, the people involved in the accident, whether anyone was injured or property damaged, and your recommendations for how to proceed.

Note: I am only summarizing a trouble report. You should discuss the actual contents with your manager in case a worker’s compensation suit results from the accident. Due to the complicated legal nature of these reports, I do not offer custom trouble report writing.

Do you need a longform report that summarizes all actions taken toward solving a problem?

You want an investigative report, designed as a precise analysis of a workplace problem and including your recommendations for how to proceed. I can help with that! Contact me for your custom rate.

      Determine Type & Frequency

Whether you need a formal or informal report, a one-off project or ongoing work – wherever you are in the report process, I can help. Contact me for details or your custom quote.

      Consider Audience & Scope

Your report should meet your audience’s needs – often your superiors or clientele. We’ll figure out what information they already know and what they need to hear to proceed.

      Gather Information

Let me communicate your expertise. We will discuss and strategize about this project – its background, purpose, time frame, budget, frequency, etc.

      Present Drafts

I won’t disappear with your unfinished report! I can provide outlines, drafts, and progress reports (yes – reports about reports!) so you can present your finished report with confidence.

      F.A.Q.

      Frequently Asked Questions

Can you help me with my Trouble Report in event of an accident or injury in the workplace?

Because of the complicated nature of workers’ compensation laws, I do not handle Trouble Reports or any other matter that might involve legal influence.

What sections do your reports include?

An informal report – often presented in a letter, memo, or email – will usually have the following sections:

      • Introduction (subject, purpose, background info)
      • Body
      • Conclusion
      • Recommendations

A formal report typically contains all of the above, but might also include abstracts and executive summaries.

Which industries do you write for?

If you can explain it to me, I can write it. Most of my experience has come from the field of education, but I can write for upstart businesses, IT, medical professionals, and more!

How long will you need to write my report?

Since reports come in so many shapes and sizes, I can’t guarantee a due date until I know more about your project. Contact me to get a better estimate of time and cost.

How often will you provide status updates?

This depends on the scope of the project. I typically recommend a weekly status report be given for any assignment, as consistent communication will help us build trust and ensure we are on the same page. However, certain tasks may require daily or monthly status reports.
